5 Ways to declutter your life
Now we have all seen those shows on tv with the person who built up 30 years of stuff in their house and now they can no longer get to the living room, because its a storage dump. Im not saying you are at that level but if you’ve been feeling a little weighed down by life recently. Here are 5 ways to declutter your life and clear some room mentally as well as physically.
Bedroom - The bedroom is for sleeping, some will object and say there are a few more activities but this isn’t that type of article. There is a term called sleep hygiene, which a good friend told me about, this means that your bedroom should be arranged for optimal sleep. So the room should be clear of anything work related, entertainment related (think tv) or anything else that isn’t to do with sleep. So move your work documents or laptop out. Move any electrical devices that emit blue light such as your phone. Get an old fashioned alarm clock to wake you up.
Plan - make a plan of what you want each day of the week to look like. Schedule in 3 meals a day, drive to work, dropping off kids etc. Think of yourself as a designer, designing your life, so make it good! Oh and then start implementing it. Yes it may not be exact every time but its a great start and a way to have an organised mind. Remember you need 8+ hours of sleep, on average people work 8 hours a day that leaves 8 hours a day to do with as you please (some people do work more so adjust accordingly).
Kitchen - Look through the cupboards, do you really need that bottle of Chinese 5 spice that you’ve used once and expired in 2005 ? chances are the answer is no. Be ruthless think about the meals you eat most often and foods you eat most often. Think about the cutlery you use most often. Anything that hasn’t been used for over 6 months (cutlery or equipment wise, don’t try selling 5 year old cookies thank you) take it to a charity shop or sell it. We all have that one draw in the kitchen with weird and wonderful stuff.
Relationships - Now i’m not gonna say go through your facebook friends and unfriend everyone you haven’t spoken to for 6 months. Quite the contrary, find those people who you really care for, who you know you can rely on. Put them all in a Whatsapp group or arrange a coffee with them. Concentrate your time on those who matter most. When you do your plan include meeting these people on a regular basis in your plan.
Trade promise - You can only buy something for your home if you get rid of one thing. This can be tough but it can help to stop you from filling the house with 15 different coloured cushions.
Bonus advice - Start small, don’t try to rearrange your whole life or home in a couple of hours. Pick one area or part of the house and dedicate a few days, weekends to it. Slow and steady wins the race remember.
