5 Foods you should try in 2020
Mum always told me to eat my vegetables and to be honest I ignored her, most of the time. She was right however, as mums usually are. There are a number of benefits from eating certain foods, and I would encourage everyone to explore and taste as many different foods as you can. The idea that everyone should eat the same stuff or the same way is hopefully a distant memory. We are all different and have different requirements. Having said that here are 5 foods which everyone should try this 2020.
Broccoli - It has been shown to have many benefits from fighting cancer to its arsenal of vitamins. If fat loss is a goal, broccoli is your friend, its super low in calories and fills you up pretty fast. Some would say its bland and boring but thats nothing a little salt, pepper, fresh chilli and garlic can’t change.
Ginger - its pretty cool in my opinion, you can put it in food to fire up the flavour of your meal or you can make it into a nice drink. It has some medicinal uses such as being an anti- inflammatory and it may even soothe muscle cramps. All in all its a rather good thing to have in the pantry. If you want a hot drink thats gonna taste great and even help with digestion throw some grated ginger in some hot water with lemon juice and a drop of honey for a delicious soothing experience.
Seeds - whether it’s pumpkin, chia or flax. They are all special in their own way. Pumpkin seeds have magnesium in them which is responsible for hundreds of processes in the body. Chia seeds have sources of omega 3 fatty acids which help with inflammation and a good alternative for non fish/meat eating diets. Flax seeds have fibre which is thought to help aid digestion. How do I use them in cooking? Im glad you asked, sprinkle all three on your porridge in the morning or in a salad to add a little crunch.
Onions - Alright alright, they may cause uncontrollable crying but thats a small price to pay for the delicious flavour this beautiful bulbs add to food. A couple of ways to lower the crying factor; try putting the onion in the fridge for a couple of hours before cutting. Wear goggles and someone told me once that if you hold a wooden spoon in your mouth while you cut them you’ll never cry. I did try that and it did work but I couldn’t bring myself to do it again as i’d have to explain it to my dad if he walked in to make a cup of tea. Add onions to gravy, broccoli or sandwiches to add some flavour.
Peppers - These come in all different shapes and sizes. They can add crunch if you cook them lightly, they can be used as dippers for hummus or they can be roasted to release a more sweeter flavour. Use with tacos, soups or raw.
These are just 5 ideas to add in to help boost the flavour and variety of your meals. Feel free to experiment and don’t worry if its not a masterpiece every time. We are not all Jamie Oliver and it just takes a little practise.
